ALBANY, NEW YORK, Jan 16, 2018: Freelance journalist, author and activist Amanda Lindhout will be speaking on January 25, 2018 at Emma Willard School. Her talk and book signing is presented by Entrepreneurs’ Organization Albany and sponsored by Key4Women and the Forum for Executive Women.  With CNN declaring that 2018 “will be the year of women,” and Time Magazine’s Person of the Year highlighting the courageous women who were “silence breakers,” Ms. Lindhout’s presentation is a unique and important voice in this growing chorus of change for women around the world. Since her release from captivity, Ms. Lindhout has raised upwards of three million dollars to help educate and empower women in Somalia and Kenya through her non-profit, the Global Enrichment Foundation.

In 2008 Amanda Lindhout traveled to Somalia as a freelance journalist to research a story on the millions of people affected by two decades of war, drought, and famine. Kidnapped by teenage criminals outside of the capital city, Mogadishu, Amanda spent 460 days enduring unimaginable hardships as a hostage in one of the world’s poorest countries. A captivating, unforgettable speaker, Lindhout alights on the positive and leaves the audience with a fuller understanding of the freedom we can all experience when we choose to embrace compassion. What emerges is a celebration of resilience — a powerful portrait of the strength of the human spirit.

Amanda captured international headlines again after her 2009 release when she returned to Somalia to lead famine relief efforts in 2011.

Amanda’s memoir, A House In The Sky, is a New York Times bestseller and is slated for development as a major motion picture with Annapurna Pictures. Oscar nominated actress Rooney Mara is set to produce and star in the film.
