US pop group Scissor Sisters are to curate a major show of works by the late US photographer Robert Mapplethorpe at Alison Jacques Gallery in London (D17) next year.
The Art Newspaper understands that the show, to open in January, will be entitled “Filthy Gorgeous” (the title of a Scissor Sisters song on the band’s 2004 album). Band members such as vocalist Jake Shears and guitarist Babydaddy will examine Mapplethorpe’s influence on younger artists such as Matthew Barney and Gillian Wearing.
Mapplethorpe’s image of a spandex-clad backside is on the cover of the group’s 2010 album “Night Work”. The work, Peter Reed, 1980, is available at the Alison Jacques Gallery along with three vintage silver gelatin prints, all entitled Lisa Lyon, 1980-82.
