Being Passionate Can Be Quite Charming

JC Duarte

EO Barcelona

Boy meets girl in a desert oasis. Boy makes a fool of himself the next day trying to impress girl by poolside. Girl recommends spiritual books for self improvement.

Does it sound like this story isn’t going to have a happy ending?

Five months later the girl turned to me – yes, I was that boy in the desert . . . and poolside – during a lakeside walk in Hamburg, Germany, and said, “Babe, your love is just too overwhelming for me. You’ve got to share it with the rest of the world!”

Jokingly, I asked if I should take mistresses.

She said I could be the most charming man in the world, and that’s when it struck me like a lightning bolt: Charming man?!?! No way, I’m a Charming Guy! Her response was that upon hearing of the hundreds, now thousands, of text (or “sms”) messages, poems and once-in-a-lifetime experiences created since we first met, her girlfriends wanted me to help their boyfriends learn how to become more charming and romantic like me. The guys who didn’t believe the stories wanted to learn how to get my “charming man” bag of goodies.

And so, at first as a joke, I promptly reserved the URL Charminguy.com, and now I'm on a mission to spread my passion.

Fast-forward two months to a chilly night in Lisbon. I can still clearly recall sitting in a restaurant with friends. My buddy, Joe, sat across the table, sinking in his seat as the “Charminguy” story was recanted. His wife had been treated like a princess all of her life, and unfortunately Joe wasn’t very charming. Little did I know, my storytelling would have an effect on his marriage. About four weeks later, his wife, Mary, e-mailed me to tell me about the text message she just received out of the blue from Joe, which said, “It’s raining in New York, but you are my sunshine.” Mary was ecstatic, and it didn’t take more than just a few words powered by authentic intention.

What did Joe learn from the experience? That 1) it’s all in the intention, 2) it’s simple to express your love, 3) he had it in him all along, 4) it’s fun and rewarding to tell your significant other what you’re thinking and 5) it’s important to just trust and be yourself.

Last month, I asked my princess from that desert oasis, fellow EO Barcelona member Maria Sipka, if I could borrow her phone. She had saved 1,127 of my text messages. Jeez . . . had I really sent her that many?!

My passion and love has now helped countless men; I’ve been adding my text messages to other original content and inspiring men to become more charming and romantic with the ladies in their lives. I’ve already received accounts of their girlfriends’ and wives’ joyful reactions after a quick copy/paste.

What have I learned from this whole process, and what does it have to do with entrepreneurship? That being passionate about what you do – and complementing it with the Internet – can inspire more than just a great business model. It can inspire a lot of new love in the world.
