As if hosting the 2008 Olympics weren't thrilling enough, the city of Beijing will soon be home to the newest branch of the EO network.
A pre-launch event for the EO Beijing chapter was held on 7 June at Block 8, a trendy new restaurant in the capital city’s Chaoyang Park. More than 50 people attended, including local prospects, EO members from around the globe and members of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO). New EO members Richard Robinson and Jim James spearheaded the group along with Sriya Chari, an EO At Large member.
“The location was new and dynamic, the food was great and everyone enjoyed the networking,” said Robinson.
The group heard firsthand accounts of what being a member is all about. Regional Director Fletcher McKenzie of EO Auckland, Area Director Tom Park of EO Korea and EO DC member and Global President Shelby Scarbrough were among those who made the trip to China for the event.
As leaders of the emerging chapter, Robinson, James and Chari are optimistic about the future. They have several goals for the first year. They hope to recruit 25 new members and start two Forum groups. “It’s not just about the numbers, though. Our philosophy is to aim for growth in value for the members,” said James.
The three leaders know how much work they have ahead of them, but they are excited and open to any guidance and encouragement EO members may have to share with them. “Our board already feels that the EO network is there for us, and we are grateful for that,” said James.
Robinson thinks that EO Beijing could ultimately be one of the strongest, largest chapters in the next three to five years. “I hope that EO will hold a fantastic University here some time after 2010,” he said.
